Department of Music

Music Composition

  • OCCASIONAL DANCE for Concert Band (2024), 5 min. Premiered by the HPU Wind Ensemble, April 2024.

  • POINT OF FLIGHT: A Concert Overture for Winds (2022), 8 min. Premiered by the HPU Wind Ensemble, April 2023.

Curriculum and Assessment

  • Assisted in the creation of the Music Business Concentration by developing MUS 2800 Intro to Music Business (2023)

  • Obtained a list of recommended courses to prepare students to enter the Master of Music Therapy program at Appalachian State University (plan to adapt it to other programs, 2023)

  • Coordinated departmental and HPU-Lead Assessment (2022-present)

    • Developed and built a departmental assessment reporting website (in progress: ultimately it should be replaced with a more robust platform), with pages showcasing relevant data to a range of stakeholders including Prospective Students and Parents, High Point Community, the BA in Music, HPU-Lead, and Administration

    • Using the assessment plans developed in Fall 21 for the HPU-Lead courses, created a set of MS forms to facilitate reporting course outcomes, and then gathered assessment data for Fall 23

    • Developed a structure for assessing departmental core principles, created an MS form to facilitate data gathering/entry at the End-of-Semester Evaluations, gathered assessment data, and prepared a Program Assessment Report AY 2023-24

    • With the help of the applied faculty, refined and enhanced student ePortfolio implementation

    • Coordinated/mentored student ePortfolio creation (Model ePortfolio provided, student work can be accessed on the assessment reporting website)

    • Documented progress toward the objectives of the departmental strategic plan (in progress).

  • Led a substantive music major curriculum revision (2020-2021)

    • Worked with the Academic Planning and Intercollegiate Review Committee (APIRC) in final clarifications and revisions.

    • Assembled the curriculum proposal, including preliminary drafting of the rationale, developing an assessment plan based on eight core principles, collected and developed new and revised syllabi, and collected supporting documents

    • Facilitated faculty discussions, compiled and kept working documents

    • Attended curriculum workshop: Carolina/CMS Summit 2.0: 21st Century Music School Design (Columbia, SC), 2019.

  • Facilitated the revision of the departmental mission and vision statements (2019)

    • Moderated an asynchronous online discussion including the full-time and adjunct faculty

    • Drafted and revised the text based on trends in the discussion

Other Service

  • Completed a Peer-Review of Teaching for Dr. Scott MacLeod (Fall 2023).

  • Music Technology Lab Renovation (2019-2024).

    • Worked with the Dean's Office to acquire essential furniture, equipment, and software to begin an electronic music program, handed the project off to Louis Raymond-Kolker when he was assigned to teach electronic music/composition

    • Worked with Campus Enhancement, Information technology and the Dean’s Offcie to remove old desks and accumulated junk, acquire new chairs and desks, move the piano and instructor station to the floor in front of the stage area, and replace the instructor station with a mobile unit.
