In AY 2022-23, I developed a new course in collaboration with Dr. Kelsey Spinnato for the Integrative Learning component of HPU-Lead (course number tbd) and made significant revisions to HNR 3603. I also saw to my own development by taking a short continuing education course on Neurodiversity and exploring the potential of TruMotivate for possible inclusion into DIS 1000. The most significant development, however was the encounter and integration of generative AI. I started working with ChatGPT in August, and with AI art generators shortly thereafter. This interaction has had a significant impact on my ideation process, guided my early experiments with Universal Design, helped me to organize and track my prototyping of new teaching methodologies, provided a new avenue for student engagement, and given me a new creative outlet. The image to the left is a fanciful interpretation of High Point University generated by the (now defunct) platform “Catbird.ai.”

As regards my research, in consultation with my Dean, I have shifted my focus to SoTL topics, and spent the year running an action study in DIS 1000 to assess the impact of my resilience pedagogy. With the data from Fall 23, I was able to present a preliminary report to the Academic Resilience Consortium in April. This shift in focus notwithstanding, I also presented research on the transmission of Latin and Afro-Cuban music from the US to Cambodia through the Philippines to the Southeast Conference of the Association for Asian Studies, where I was appointed to an “at-large” board position.

As regards my service to the university, I began implementing the departmental assessment plan, streamlining the reporting process and developing a prototype website for organizing and reporting the data. I continued serving on the Honors Scholars committee, but was reassigned from the EPC committee for an assessment role within the SoAD that has yet to be defined.
