I have become particularly interested in three “do it yourself” pieces: compositions which, in one way or another, require the performer to decode, or perhaps, make an arrangement of the score.

I’m clearly in the right place; the sessions are energizing, and I leave each session eager to get my fingers into the exercises.

As Wallace said to Grommit, “Well - I think we got away with that, eh pooch?”

I feel like I have a pretty good handle on the technical issues in Wuorinen; at this point, I’m thinking more in terms of architecture and direction, and, if my hunch is correct, these will help make my technique more consistent.

Commodo means “unhurried” (Cf. commodious = roomy, spacious), and I first encountered it in the Fauré sonata

Yesterday I got a message asking whether I’d like to appear on a weekly show featuring local artists and contemporary music. It would be about a month out, and I figured I should be able to play something in that time frame. Wuorinen might be a stretch, though. Maybe I should prepare a backup?

So why Wuorinen? As is so often the case, I have no idea. My library is full of fiendishly difficult pieces, many of which I’ve wanted to play for years, but this one… just called to me. That’s how it works in my world.
